What is employer tuition assistance?


Some organizations offer tuition assistance to their employees to promote professional development. Students may qualify for tuition assistance depending on their employer and what the employer provides. The first place to look for this information is through your HR department and/or manager. You might also check your employee handbook. Ask what resources if any are available.


Once you learn your employer's specific requirements and process, notify your Admissions Advisor. The amount (if any) of eligible employer-sponsored funding will need to be worked into your financial projection so if you have already had your financial aid appointment, you may want to meet with them again. 


On CIAT's end, the amount of eligible employee-sponsored funding will be deferred to meet the unique timelines and process of your employer. Loans will not be applied to these courses. Options include direct pay to CIAT upfront and/or after the course is completed and/or tuition reimbursement to the student after the course is completed.

The amount of eligible employer-sponsored funding will not be treated as a personal investment balance, no payment plans will be needed to cover this amount. However, payment plans may still apply if there is a remaining balance after all funding is provided.


Early focus on academic success is key; some employers may ask for transcripts and may not pay for repeat courses. They also may only reimburse passed grades - make sure these are all questions you are obtaining from your employer.


Tuition discounts or exclusive scholarships may be available depending on your employer's partnership details. EDCOR for example provides a 10-15% tuition discount when their affiliated employees use corporate tuition assistance.


What steps should I take to determine my employer's available tuition assistance?


Reach out to your HR department or manager: This is the first place to look for information on tuition assistance benefits. Contact your Human Resources department or manager if you need clarification about your employer’s tuition assistance program, and be sure to ask some of these essential questions:

  1. What is the exact dollar amount of tuition assistance offered?
  2. What are the eligibility requirements to qualify for the available tuition assistance?
  3. What is the timeline for receiving these benefits? (e.g., waiting periods, application deadlines)
  4. Are there any specific documentation requirements?
  5. How is the tuition assistance provided (e.g., reimbursement, direct payment to the institution)?
  6. Are there any restrictions or limitations on the types of programs or courses covered?
  7. Is there a maximum annual or lifetime limit on the tuition assistance benefit?
